GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Three counselors are employed at the school. They are assisted by a full-time secretary. The students are assigned alphabetically to counselors who work with the same students for three years. Students may request to see any of the counselors, however, and joint efforts among the counselors on behalf of certain students are not uncommon. Students are assigned as follows: Kathi Hromas, A-F and International/Exchange students; Michael White - G-M and NCAA Clearinghouse; Lindy Zamborsky, N-Z. The Guidance Office is open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. Students may come any time to see a counselor, check scholarship and college files, or work on a guidance lab computer. There are two important guidance programs on the computers - Discover (a career investigation and identification data base and Actiprep (a program to practice and train for the ACT). Teachers may send student to work on these programs. When a counselor needs to see a student, a Guidance Request form will be sent to the classroom. This is to be When Convenient unless there is a pressing issue and this will be indicated on the form. Students are encouraged to see counselors before and after school, during Enrichment and during lunch in order to avoid missing class.

The guidance department is housed in a suite of offices in the northeast wing of the high school. Guidance services exist for the purpose of assisting students with their educational and vocational plans and for helping with personal problems as they affect educational development. Guidance personnel visit with students about courses, testing, transcripts, study skills, careers, or any matter of concern to the student. Assistance in choosing a career and the appropriate plan to get there is given to every student. Guidance personnel also work closely with individual teachers or groups of teachers and with the administration to identify and meet the needs of SHS students.

Parents who have questions or concerns may call the guidance office for assistance and may make appointments to visit with a counselor. Parents may be asked to participate in a staffing with the counselor and teachers of their child if the need arises. Staffings are generally scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Teachers are notified by memo of the time and place as soon as the staffing request is made.

The Guidance department makes referrals to various local and state agencies which operate to provide services for students with special or unusual needs.

Teachers are encouraged to contact a counselor at anytime with a student concern. Teachers see the students daily and classroom observations are invaluable when trying to assist students with academic and personal issues..
